Take the Cup This Year with these Hockey Savings Tips

With the Stanley Cup right around the corner it may be time to consider how much money you have to put into your love of hockey this year. Although it is a fantastic and entertaining sport, hockey can become a huge money pit if you’re not careful about what you’re spending. From major equipment expenses to checking out your favorite teams live, you can really be hurting after the season is over. With a few simple tricks of the game you should be able to enjoy this hockey season without feel the icy cold burden of the price. This season there will be fewer penalty shots on your budget and more power plays to keep you and your family excited about the upcoming games.

1. Starter Kits
If you have a child that is just starting to get the hockey bug then a starter kit might be the best way to help cut down on spending. Starter kits usually have a discounted price on each of the items so you won’t spend as much as you would buying each thing your child needs seperatley. Most starter kits come in an age appropriate size, so you may want to purchase the kit based on what is going to give your child the maximum amount of time with kit. If you have more than one child then they can easily share a starter kit as it usually comes with more than one stick. You may end up buying a couple of extra pieces, but it will still save you a whole lot of money. As your hockey player grows older or wears down some of the items you can easily replace them one by one without having to worry about everything going bad at the same time. You can even pass the kit down to young players when your hockey star has outgrown the kit.

2. Second Hand Equipment
When it comes to supplying the hocket players in your family with the appropriate equipment it may be a wise choice to stick to the used equipment. This is especially important if you have younger players who are in the midst of growth spurts. You should be able to find decent padding, hockey sticks and skates in your favorite sporting goods store. These stores usually have a special used section that contain plenty of children’s sporting equipment. Of course, older players can also find some incredibly finds as well. This can be one of the best places to find reliable padding, especially since the store must go over each item that is turned in for quality. Another great way to find cheap equipment is to check out your local thrift stores. If your community has a strong community based around hockey then you should be able to find some amazing items. You may also want to check out yard sales for items that will suit your needs.

3. Season Pass
Whether your into the major leagues, minor leagues, college or peewee games you should be able to get more out of your money by buying a season pass. Many people who love to frequent the games greatly benefit from having a pass that will get them into any game they want to see. The best thing about the season pass if you don’t have to spend big bucks to get into the highest quality seats. In fact, you can easily find amazing seats in a moderately priced area, which will really keep you satisfied all season. If you still think a season pass might be a bit too much for your family then you could always consider buying a pass and sharing it with another family. This will allow you to split the cost evenly and you won’t have to feel obligated to go to every single game of the season. You may have to spend some time working on a schedule for the passes, but it will certainly cut down on your hockey expenses before the end of the day.

4. Skip the Pros
One of the major things that really destroys the budget it the fact that many people feel the need to check out the professional games as much as possible. This can be a huge mistake on your part as major league prices can really cost a lot depending on the team you adore. Instead of spending money on the majors you can easily spend half of the price to check out a minor league or college level game. These games hold just as much action and could give you a glimpse of some of the players that might be in the majors in a year or two. If the price tag is still a bit too much for you then check out local pee wee league every once in awhile. You’ll love watching the kids learn their skill while witnessing them improve throughout the season. You may also run across a friendly game on the street or local ice rink that might suit your need for the hockey buzz.

5. Say No to Packages
A lot of cable companies might try to lure you into one of their hockey packages which could add up for $50 a month to your cable bill! This is an unacceptable price for many, especially if you’re on a tight budget. Instead of buying into the package try to find a location where you can watch the games. There’s many different sports bars and restaurants that will allow you to have a drink, or enjoy some appetizers while enjoying the entire game. You may also want to ask around and see which friends have the game playing with their playing company. Of course, if you really want to get the package then you might want to ask friends to help chip in for the extra price. Make sure you throw a party every time there is a game though and enjoy the extra company while you cheer on your team. On the other hand, you should be able to find most games online, so don’t fret if you can’t find the game on your cable.

6. Fan Clothes
When it comes to supporting your favorite team or player there’s nothing quite as appealing as fan clothing. From t-shirts and jersey to hoodies and socks, there’s certainly a whole lot you can choose from to show off your own style while supporting your team. Of course, these items often come for a pretty high price which doesn’t always suit the household budget. There are a few ways to get some of the items you need at a price that won’t make you feel like you’ve been left in the penalty box. A lot of the major retailers for your team will often have sales on items, especially if there is a major holiday or the team is out of the play off. A lot of clothes will also make it onto the clearance rack, especially if they have been on the label for a long time or no one seems to be buying them. Another way to show off your pride at a very low price is to make your own fan clothing. You can gather t-shirts with your teams colors and use shirt paint to create incredible designs that will really make your team proud to have you as a fan.

7. Street Hockey
As the weather heats many of the ice rinks are out of commission, which means you might have to pay a whole lot to rent out a rink for your team. Instead of showing off your skills on the ice you can easily take up a new hobby by taking the game to the street. Street hockey is certainly a cheaper way to enjoy playing your favorite sport. It requires less equipment and can be played with or without rollerblades, which adds to the savings even more. The best thing about street hockey is you can often substitute a lot of the supplies for common items at home. For instance, you can create a cheap and efficient goal using cones, baseball bases, or anything you can think of to mark off the area. Another great substitute is replacing the hockey ball or roller puck with a simple tennis ball or other common ball. Of course, one of the best money saving qualities of street hockey is it can be played almost anywhere for free.

8. Skates
Skates can be a tricky part of your budget for hockety. If you’re an adult that tends to play hockey often then you many want to consider splurging a little and buying a more expensive pair. This will ensure that your skates actually do last longer so you don’t have to keep buying cheap pairs to as a replacement. The only thing you may have to replace from time to time is the blade. Of course, buying skates for children is an entirely different story. Most kids outgrow shoes faster than they do just about anything else. This can be a huge problem when it comes to buying skates as they tend to be pricer than shoes. Instead of buying your child an expensive pair then you may want to buy one of the cheaper brands. You may also want to consider buying the skates a size or two bigger. This gap can easily be filled with thick socks and will ensure your child’s skates don’t end up in the donation pile within a month.

9. Join a League
If you’re trying to find the cheapest way to enjoy some hockey action then you may want to consider choosing a league to join. Leagues will instantly give you a team which will work as a great support system when it comes to improving your skills and pushing your game a little further. With a league you also won’t have to deal with finding a location to play, buying padding and other equipment as well as locating people to play with. This can all be pretty pricey if you’re not careful. Most leagues will charge a small dues each month, but it will certainly cut down on the amount you spend without the league. Children will also grow into the sport easier when they are placed in a league as it will teach them sportsmanship as well many of the skills they need to become the player they’re capable of becoming.

10. Carpool
When it comes to hockey, walking tends not to be a realistic option in the means of transformation. You also might not be able to take public transportation because of the heavy equipment you’ll have to lug around from place to place. One great way to relieve the pressure of transportation is to carpool with your teammates. Carpooling allows everyone to have a reliable way to games without forcing everyone to spend their excess money on gas. Of course, you may want to find the player with the biggest vehicle to get everyone to the game, but simply chipping in for gas won’t leave your pockets empty. This is also a great way to boost morale, especially for kids going to their first season of hockey. If you just plan on attending games then you may want to stick to the carpool rule, especially if you attend games often or games out of town. You’ll even get to enjoy the buzz of having companions cheering with you as you head home from a victorious game.

Hockey is a great way to burn off some of those winter calories. Although the world is warming up around us and the playoffs are rapidly approaching, you’ll still be able to enjoy the exciting savings these tips offer. So get ready to cheer on your favorite team without stressing up the money.

1. Save Aluminum Cookware
We all have that unsightly cookware we’re slightly embarrassed of due to the stains that have accumulated over the years. When it comes to aluminum cookware there’s usually very few ways to avoid this aging process apart from getting rid of the old to make room for the new. This can be a costly mistake though as those aluminum pans can be one of your biggest assets in the kitchen. Instead of tossing out the old try giving it a make over with a few quick cleaning tips. For many of these pans you can simply placing applesauce or tomato slices on the pan. Once the pan is coated turn on the burner or stick it in a hot oven. The acids from these foods will knock out stains quickly and you’ll have pans your happy to present to the world again. Another quick tip is to clean the pans with baking soda. This material has amazing cleaning priorities and will ensure you won’t have to mess with scrubbing again. Another way to avoid the stains, when you do buy new pans, is to keep them out of the dishwasher. Wash them thoroughly by hand and dry them right away for results that will last years.

2. Know Your Needs
When it comes to shopping for new pots and pans it is incredibly important to know what you need out of a pan. There’s a lot of different types of pans on the market for a reason, so a little research on your part is certainly in order. If you’re a beginner you may want to avoid pots and pans that are copper based as you may find your food sticking or being ruined while working with these advanced pans. Of course, if you do find yourself getting bored on the non-stick pans then you may want to consider copper as it conducts heat fast and could be just what you need to develop your skills. Cast iron skillets are great for household chefs who love to work a bit slower in the kitchen. These pans heat up slowly, but work great for making foods that need a little extra seasoning. One of the easiest bets is to stick with pots and pans that have Teflon. They’re not only a cinch to clean, but they will make cooking in a hurry a definite possibility.

3. Go Green
A lot of people are trying to make their kitchen a greener place. If this is the case in your home then you may want to try out some of the green friendly brands on the market. Most retailers should carry these amazing pans, but if you’re unsure what you’re looking for make sure to ask before you make any decisions. Green pans are a great way to cut down on your energy use. They tend to heat up quickly and cook faster without actually burning the food. This not only cuts down on the gas and/or electric you use, but will help prevent food wastage in the home. These pots and pans use a Teflon like substance that is incredibly ease to clean up too, so you won’t have to worry about running water over them for too long at all. One of the best things about the pan is they’re made of materials that are safe to use in the home and won’t harm the environment if they are actually discarded in the future.

4. Buy What You Need
One of the major problems with shopping for pots and pans is most people believe they need to have a matching set. This can be a terrible way to waste money if you aren’t careful. You should usually only buy a new pot or pan if there is something wrong with the one you have, which eliminates the entire process of buying a few set of cookware. Another problem many face is the need to match all of their cookware. You may find, through the years, that some pots and pans from one brand are better than others. This may leave you with a sauce pan from one brand and a classic skillet from another. This is a great way to keep track of the way you spend money on cooking ware though. The separate pieces will give you more freedom when shopping for replacement and you’ll never have to deal with the disappointment of buying a full set that you hate. It is also easier to upgrade your cookware piece by piece which will help you keep your monthly family budget in check.

5. Read Reviews
Sometimes you may feel a little lost when you go in to purchase cookware. There’s a whole lot of selection out there to choose from which means a lot of thinking on your part. Although you may, at first, feel tempted to go straight for the celebrity name brand you enjoy the most, you may want to take a step back and think about what the set actually gives you. This is where the internet will play an important part in your search for new cookware. Try looking on different sites for the product you’re interest in. There should be several reviews on the product, especially if it is one of the more popular brands. Make sure to read the longer reviews carefully as these will provide you with the most useful information. You may even want to take notes based on the reviews on different sites. After you’ve done your research then you’ll already be set to buy as you’ll already know where you can buy what you’re looking for at the cheapest price.

6. Splurge
Although it might not be a common practice to splurge when it comes to saving money, it is one of the best things you can do with your pots and pans. If you’re absolutely certain there is a great set out there for you then you should probably buy it. Even though this might be a bigger expense than you’d like to pay you’ll end up saving money in the long run. There are many reasons for this though. One of the main reasons is because buying an expensive set almost guarantees you that you’ll end up keeping the set for much longer. The pots and pans are more durable and will stand up to cooking and cleaning for years to come. Another major reason is you’ll actually enjoy cooking with them. Your food will taste better and you’ll feel more confident as a chef, which means you’ll want to explore more with different foods. With your love of cooking at its peak you’ll end up spending less money on going out which will help out the family budget big time.

7. Multipurpose Pieces
Purchasing cookware can be a pretty exhilarating experience if you know exactly what you’re looking for. One way to really max out the savings on cookware is to look for pieces that can be used for many different purchases. There’s a lot of reasons why a pot or pan should be able to hold up more than one job in the kitchen. One major reason is the fact that the kitchen can be a pretty busy place, so you need a pan that can hold up to cooking on the burner without being ruined by be put in the oven later on. This can be important to anyone cooking a big meal because no one wants their hard work to get cold while everything else is cooking. Another reason is to help keep the budget down while raising the functionality of your kitchen. A piece that can boil water one day and be used to a casserole the next is the perfect piece for a household looking to save money and time with their cookware.

8. Stick to Plastic
Your kitchen utensils can play a huge part in the health of your pots and pans. Although it might seems more efficient to use metal utensils while you cook this could be one of the fastest ways to destroy the insides of your pots and pans. The metal pieces are a lot more abrasive to pots and pans that utilize Teflon or other non-stick surfaces. Instead of opting for the more expensive metal pieces you can easily replace them with plastic. Plastics are a lot nicer on the inside of your pots and pans and will keep them from getting scratched and useless as quickly. Although plastics do have more of a potential to melt or break than metal utensils they are a whole lot easier and cheaper to replace than the pots and pans you spend so much money on.

9. Think Used
One of the cheapest ways to avoid spending a whole lot of money is to consider getting a used set of pots and pans. A lot of the time family will be more than happy to pass over their pots and pans when they decided to upgrade, so you may want to listen to see if anyone you know if planning on throwing out their old set. If this isn’t the case then there’s still a good chance you can find a good set at a local thrift store. Some people will donate full sets if you enjoy having all the same brand of cookware. However, you may have the most luck picking and choosing what you want to purchase in these locations. Most cookware stays in great shape for some time and the purchases you make at the thrift store could help keep your kitchen running smoothly until you decide to upgrade.

10. Shop Sales
The best way to get exactly what you want out of your cookware is to shop the sales. Cookware is one of the more popular items to go on sale so you shouldn’t have to wait very long to enjoy the set of pots and pans you’ve had your eye on. One of the best ways to keep track of sales is to download a shopping app that will update you whenever your favorite stores have a sale. You may also want to frequent stores that have your item to see if you happen upon a sale. Another simple way is to keep an eye out for coupons that could save you so much on your items. With a little patience and research you’ll have the set you’ve always wanted at a price you can afford in no time.

Your cookware plays an important role in the way your household functions which is why you should have just what you want to cook with. With these tips you should be able to find a way to find the perfect balance of cookware to make your daily meals a real treat. Now, your family will have nothing but compliments for your meals which will really make your job even more rewarding.

prom-tips-2014
1. Attire
Choosing the best dress or tuxedo for the prom can be one of the most difficult and priciest aspect of going to prom. There’s a lot of different styles to choose from which makes it really difficult to find what you need and want at a price that is affordable. Luckily, there’s many ways to get your attire at a price that won’t leave you hurting. In many communities there is an organization that will help students get their prom attire for free. These tuxes and dresses are typically used, but tend to be in excellent shape. You can also donate your old formal ware to these organizations so other people can be helped as well. If this isn’t a possibility in your area then you may want to check out some second hand stores to see what they have to offer. Many have a great selection and with a few alterations you can look chic for your big dance. You could also talk to friends and relatives about borrowing something from them which will save you even more money. Another huge way to save is to simply rent out the outfit. You can get a wide selection of styles at an affordable price and you won’t have to worry about clearing closet space for something you’re never going to wear again.

2. Beauty Schools
Most girls really want the royal treatment when it comes to getting ready for prom. This is great for the experience, but can be a terrible expenditure that can easily be avoided. From waxings, manicures, make up and hair styling your prom princess can get just about everything done at a beauty school. These schools are designed so students can get plenty of practice before they decide to take their qualifying exams. Although you might feel nervous about a student doing your hair you will certainly feel relieved once you sit in the styling chair. Most students are great with these types of tasks and are closely watched by instructors to ensure your hair won’t be messed up. You’ll end up getting the entire makeover for less than you would pay for one item in a regular salon. The best thing is you’ll be helping out a student who will be incredibly excited to make you look your best for such a memorable occasion.

3. Photography
Everyone wants to capture this major milestone in life, but sometimes it isn’t always plausible to purchase the portraits actually taken at the prom. These packages are usually over priced and tend to be a bit bland as the photographer is working more on an assembly line method than a personal method. Instead of opting to buy these photographs you may want to ask a student photographer to help you out. This will not only help out the student with practice and job experience, but will ensure you get what you need at a lower price. Of course, if you do have photographer friends you may want to ask them first because you might get a better deal out of it. If you’ve already hired a photographer for senior photos then you may want to ask if you can combine the senior photo package to include a few shots of your child and their prom date. The photographer might charge a bit extra for this, but it will still be cheaper than the package deals done at the school.

4. Carpool
Getting your child to the prom can be a major cost in itself. Most students don’t simply want a ride with parents and many of them don’t have gas money to make the trip themselves. For some students, a limo is the absolute best way to go, but this could cost the student and parents hundreds of dollars. If your child can’t go without the limo experience then try to encourage your child to get a group together to carpool. Each student could chip in for the limo so the cost is less burdensome. You could also only rent the limo out for an hour. This will give the students ample time to get from their pick up location to the school dance in style. Of course, if the limo isn’t on the must have list then you may want to ask your child to carpool with other students. Each student could chip in for the price of gas so getting to their destination and after parties could be exceptionally cheap.

Of course, you can also cut the paper into an egg shape and then create a center piece for your child’s face to peek through. Before you put the picture in the frame have your kids decorate the egg as if it were an Easter egg.

10. Easter Bunny Box
Make sure your kids thank the Easter Bunny by leaving him a treat box behind. You can easily make a box by folding up the edges of some paper. Add a few bunny ears to make the box look even more authentic. When the box is made have the kids color it and add glitter and other finishing pieces to create a look worthy of the bunny. Inside of the box you can use colored shredded paper for Easter grass that the bunny will love. Fill the box with special treats like carrots and some of the snacks you made for the holiday. You can even have the kids write special notes for the Easter Bunny. Make sure to leave the box out where he can find it though.
